Copper Plate Intaglio Printing

COPPER

PLATE

INTAGLIO

PRINTING

For my intaglio copper plate I hand drew a bonsai. I then transferred my bonsai unto the plate and etched it using my intaglio scribe.

This part was the easy part. Next I continued onto the chemical etching process. I created my own acid bath cocktail with 1:1:3 parts Lime Away, Pool Shock, and Water.

Thinking that the combination would cut into my etch and make a nice surface for printing.

It did bubble up some and have a nice acidic odor, but I do not think that it was near as strong acidicly as what we use in class. Below

are some photos of the process.

"I did get a decent bite on the copper from acid bath, but could not remove ground!"

So, long story short, I managed to get my copper plate etched and bathed, but I won't be able to complete the Intaglio printing process as it should be. I went ahead and posted the event hoping for some extra credit!

Next step "Experimental Printing!"

My Process:
1. Dampen Watercolor Paper.
2. Ink Plate.
3. Cover Paper with towel.
4. Press Plate using extra roller.
5. Uncover Masterpiece.

I didn't get exactly what I was hoping for, so I tilted it Yellow Rectangle #1 and will be using It as part of my hybrid process.

Thank You,
Ill keep ya' posted!

  1. Hey Caleb! Nice work sourcing a home method of acid etching- where did you find the formula? To remove the hard ground, you need mineral spirits- they sell it at hardware stores. Make sure you wear gloves (if you can find them) and use it outside- the fumes are pretty strong, and it's also flammable. That might help you get a better print.

    1. I found the formula in or book. Kinda fudged the ratio a bit. I will keep working on it. Did I get my extra credit ☺?
